IKUPI Becomes a Resource Person for the Commemoration of National Waste Awareness Day (HPSN) in Pondok Bambu Urban Village, East Jakarta

Jakarta, February 27, 2025: IKUPI became one of the resource persons in the HPSN in Pondok Bambu Village with the title “National Waste Awareness Day, Endless Commemoration”. This activity was attended by representatives of the Environmental Service, Waste Bank, NGOs, RT and RW Heads, and community groups. The HPSN commemoration was motivated by the Leuwigajah TPA incident, which buried 157 people alive, allegedly caused by a methane gas explosion. Since 2005, February 21 has been commemorated as National Waste Awareness Day. After 20 years of HPSN commemoration, residents in Pondok Bambu Village initiated an interactive discussion that wanted to try to uncover the root of the problem so that HPSN is not just a ceremony that gives the impression that there is no solution.
IKUPI had the opportunity to share stories from the experience of mentoring related to upstream waste management. Upstream waste management is carried out to reduce waste in the TPA. Some upstream waste management facilities are Waste Bank, Recycling Center (PDU), TPS3R, and TPST. Waste management efforts must pay attention to technical operational aspects, policies, community participation, financing, institutions, and occupational health and safety (K3). Community participation is one of the important aspects to support the sustainability of waste management. The initiative from Pondok Bambu Urban Village is a manifestation that the community is starting to be critical in waste management efforts.
