The Aquaponics Basic Training

On May 22, 2016, the IUCCE followed the aquaponic basic training implementation in Krajen, Gunung Pati District Semarang. The activity is collaboration between the City and Regional Planning Department UNDIP with Krajen citizens. In the training, participants were given information in regards the kinds of planting methods in aquaponics.

Aquaponics is combination methods in fish farming (aquaculture) with methods of planting without soil using a medium planting (hydroponic). Aquaponics is a farming system that utilizes the fish waste as a source of nutrients for plants and plant utilization as controlling the quality of water for fish. Therefore, it can be said that aquaponics is a method of fish farming and sustainable agriculture which both form the symbiotic relationship mutualism.

According to Hasanuddin (2016), some advantages of the aquaponics system are:

  1. Do not require large areas
  2. Save water
  3. Almost all species of fresh water fish and plants can be applied in the aquaponics  system
  4. Practical
  5. Low costs maintenance. No tilling,fertilizing, and weeding
  6. The production is fully healthy because organic
  7. Getting a double result, they are fish and vegetables
