This program is cooperation between IIED, Rockefeller Foundation, ACCCRN and IUCCE. The IUCCE role here as the research institute, and also assists the research which was conducted by Safrinal Sofaniadi, Rusmadi and Aniessa Delima Sari. The program is in the form of the study in order to see how the community or the public response to the undergoing climate change, especially the coastal area in Semarang. The study lasted for 1 (one) year in 2013.
When the climate changes happen, the most susceptible area which changed is the coastal areas such as flooding, abrasion or tidal wave. It happens in the coastal city of Semarang. The tidal flood and abrasion cannot be avoided anymore. The settlement will suffer from the highest of the tidal flooding, and the shorelines in Semarang diminish every year. How the people’s behavior in the response to these changes. It carried out the research by the IUCCE which can be used then as the guidance in order to know the public attitudes in the future.
This study begins by giving the survey questionnaire to the community. This survey aims to find out whether the community desires in the face of the climate change in line with the Semarang Government Program, which then will be synergized. The location of this study consists of 4 different locations of the most vulnerable in facing the climate change, namely the Tambak Lorok, Panggung Lor, Tapak and Mangkang Kidul. In this study participated in cooperation with the Semarang City Government, namely Bappeda Semarang and the Marine & Fisheries Department Semarang.
Each region has the different response in handling to the climate change from the four locations of the study. In Tapak area for example, people are more likely to use APO (the wave retention tools). In Tapak and Mangkang Kidul area plants Mangrove as the primary prevention against the abrasion. When the sea level rises, the people in the coastal area will make different activity. There the people will raise their home, make embankments or plant the mangroves. The different treatments are influenced by the differences of the environment topography.
There are several alternatives in response to the climate change. It is because in connection to the health and comfort for the community in carrying out their activities. One of the alternatives is building the flats or moving to a place that free from the tidal flood. However, fishermen think if they move to the place that relatively far from their work, they will spend more expense for the transportation. Furthermore, they prefer to find a save area when the tidal flood comes, and will return to his home when the tidal receding.
