The Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) is still one of the major public health problem in Indonesia and particularly in the city of Semarang. The number of patients and the spreading area is increasing along with the increasing mobility and population density. IUCCE is as a facilitator in implementing this program, one of the duties is requesting the wide range of stakeholders in order to participate in the initiative resilience to the city climate change.
The facilitation which has been done as follows :
- The community empowerment strategy
- The ability in composing or writing the scientific articles, publications and KIE media (Knowledge, Information, Education).
- The development of materials and training materials for the community empowerment
- The development in the scientific writing publications and KIE media.
This program initiated by ACCCRN in collaboration between the Government of Semarang together with IUCCE and Mercy Corps Indonesia. The program has general purpose which is controlling the dengue fever caused by the climate change. The program is done in 6 pilot project villages, they are: Kramas, Sumurejo, Sukorejo, Kalipancur, Jatisari, and Tlogomulyo village.
The climate change is signed by the changes in the weather patterns (temperature) and the extreme precipitation , the increased of precipitation and drought, the increased of malnutrition, the increased climate-related disasters and changes in the distribution of the disease vectors (vector-borne diseases) such as Dengue Fever.
In addition to the general objectives above, the ACTIVED program also has another purpose, namely:
- Provide the knowledge why it’s important in controlling dengue virus and dengue virus when to take the patient to the health facility.
- Provide skills behavior change communication, facilitation techniques and feedback, and build commitment.
In its implementation nowadays, the ACTIVED program has been fostering the school (small physician and exercise teachers) and the community (Puskesmas and the village officials), to work together to eradicate the dengue fever around the environment. In Semarang, the biggest outbreaks of the dengue fever are in Tembalang District. It is because the location is the most densely populated with high mobility in Semarang.
The main target of the ACTIVED program is the schools, especially primary schools, including the teachers, community health centers, UPTD District and students themselves. Besides, there is also the target of the society which includes the community health centers, sub-district, village, and cadres in the community.
The program also involves various stakeholders in Semarang such as the government, academics and the community to be able to achieve the goals of the program that has been arranged. The ACTIVE program will end in 2016, is expected after the program ends, Semarang City can be free from the dengue fever or minimum Semarang is able to prevent or minimize the occurrence of the dengue fever.
